[Internal] SPSS Installation Options

Introduction

As of August 2023, UIS is paying for SPSS:

  • For use on an unlimited number of university owned computers.
  • For use on an unlimited number of university-managed virtual desktops.
  • NOT on personally owned computers.  (This is a change from our previous licensing.)
  • We are only licensed to us SPSS for research or academics, not university business.

There are two ways to license SPSS:

  • When installing, tell it you have a license server, and point it at licenses.pacificu.edu.
    • Pro: Endpoints can get new license codes automatically.
    • Con: Won't work outside the firewall.
  • When installing, use an authorized user code.
    • Pro: The device can leave campus (continue to use SPSS outside the firewall).
    • Con: The code will expire in a year and they'll have to get a new one.

If someone wants SPSS but doesn't have a university-owned computer:

  • We can loan them a university owned computer with SPSS.
  • We can let them use Apporto.  Any student, faculty or staff member can log into Apporto from any web browser and access SPSS (already licensed).
  • They could buy SPSS themselves.  See ThinkEDU and other resellers.

If someone wants SPSS on a university-owned computer:

  • On a Mac they can get it through the Pacific University Self Service app.  Just search for SPSS.
  • On a PC they can get it through the Software Center.  Just search for SPSS and choose Authorized User or Network User (see above for the difference between these two).
  • Or, a UIS tech can install these files.  (We want to avoid giving out the installers and authorization codes to end users.)  Go to this Box folder to find the installers and authorization codes.

If someone has SPSS already but their authorization code has expired:

  • They might have an older version of SPSS that isn't supported anymore.  They may need to install the latest version using the methods shown above.  As of August 2023 the latest version is SPSS 29.
  • If they have the most recent version, they can use the options in the Pacific University Self Service app on Mac or the Software Center on PCs.  The Mac version is smart enough to not reinstall.  The PC version will reinstall, but won't take long if they're on a good internet connection.
  • Or you can give them the authorization code that they can put in the authorization wizard themselves.  For August 2023 to July 2024, the code is: 711641d8b8aad32db336
