Problem: UpToDate Requires Re-Verification of Pacific Affiliation

UpToDate is a clinical decision support website and app utilized by many health professions students through the Pacific University Libraries' research database access system.

Problem

When Pacific people sign into UpToDate they generate a username and password that can be used to log in to UpToDate via web or app.  This login can usually be utilized from any network.  Yet users are required to periodically verify that they are still associated with Pacific University.  The messaging from UpToDate seems to indicate what users must be connected from an on-campus network to do this.  This can be problematic from users who are studying or working remotely.

Cause

Like many research databases, UpToDate keeps track of which web traffic seems to come from IP addresses associated with Pacific University.  The assumption is that web requests that come from Pacific are covered under our subscription with the service.  Unlike some databases, UpToDate allows use of their system from non-Pacific IP addresses, but does require occasional verification.

Solution

UpToDate verification can be renewed by logging on to the system from an on-campus network (Boxer Wireless or Boxer Legacy).  However, it is also possible to use the Library's web proxy system to connect from anywhere in the world.  The proxy system routes web traffic through Pacific University servers, so that the access appears to come from Pacific even though the user is on some other network.  To access UpToDate via the proxy, log in using this link (and log on with PUnet ID and password if prompted):
