Provided To
All non-employee accounts including students, employees and most classes of sponsored accounts. (Employee accounts use Duo multi-factor authentication.)
Description
Simple and TOTP (Time-based One Time Password) are multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods that protect accounts not protected by employee's Duo MFA. Users can switch freely between two authentication methods:
- Simple MFA sends a one-time code to the recovery address on file for an account.
- TOTP requires a code generated by an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator (available on Android and Apple devices).
When using a personal device (one the user has sole access to), users can request that the system remember them, which means they will be prompted less often to use MFA to log in.
As of January 2026, MFA, once enabled, cannot be disabled (except during short periods for technical troubleshooting).
