How to Turn Off AI Features in Your Google Apps

Pacific University Google Workspace for Education accounts have several features powered by generative artificial intelligence.  Many of these features only activate when one knowingly selects them (e.g. going to Google Gemini and asking it a question).  However, some features activate automatically.  This guide shows how to turn off these automatic AI features.

Pacific University Google Workspace for Education accounts have several features powered by generative artificial intelligence.  Many of these features only activate when one knowingly selects them (e.g. going to Google Gemini and asking it a question).  However, some features activate automatically.  This guide shows how to turn off these automatic AI features.

Procedure

  1. Log into the Boxer Mail web interface with your Pacific University account.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right corner and select "See all settings."

  3. To disable Smart Compose: On the General tab, find the "Smart Compose" section and choose the "Writing suggestions off" option as well as "Smart Compose personalization off."

  4. To disable Smart Reply: Find the "Smart Reply" section and choose "Smart Reply off."

  5. To disable Nudges: Find the "Nudges" section and uncheck the boxes for suggesting emails to reply to or follow up on.

  6. To disable Smart Features:

    1. Note: Disabling Smart Features will disable many non-generative AI features, such as spelling and grammar suggestions.

    2. Find the "Smart Features" section and uncheck "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet."  A new window will open.

    3. Below that, click on the button reading "Manage Workspace smart feature settings" and switch "Smart features in Google Workspace" and "Smart features in other Google products" to off (the "x" option).

    4. Click "Save" at the bottom of the new window.

  7. To save your changes, Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save Changes."

  8. Log into the Google Drive web interface with your Pacific University account.

  9. Open any Google Doc.

  10. Go to the "Tools" pull-down menu and select "Preferences."

  11. Uncheck the checkbox for "Show Smart Compose suggestions."

  12. Uncheck the checkbox for "Show Smart Reply suggestions."

  13. Click "Ok."

  14. Open any Google Sheet.

  15. Go to the "Tools" pull-down menu and open the "Suggestion controls" sub-menu.

  16. Uncheck the following:

  17. Enable formula suggestions.

  18. Enable Smart Fill suggestions.

  19. Enable pivot table suggestions.

  20. Log into Google Calendar with your Pacific account,

  21. Click on the gear icon in the top right and choose "Settings."

  22. Go to the "Google Workspace smart features" section.

  23. Uncheck the checkbox for "Show events from Gmail."

  24. Note: This will delete any items already on your calendar added from your email by the AI system.
