Supported Operating Systems and Known Issues

Summary

UIS verifies operating systems to ensure that they will work with university systems. Users may experience issues that UIS will be unable to resolve when using operating systems that are not fully compatible, or have not yet been vetted as fully compatible, with our systems. UIS verifies operating systems to ensure that they will work with university systems. Users may experience issues that UIS will be unable to resolve when using operating systems that are not fully compatible, or have not yet been vetted as fully compatible, with our systems. See the Service Level Agreement for Computer Support for more information on levels of support.
Operating Systems listed as "Security Risk" are not allowed on the Pacific Network; for offline options, please Contact Support.

Windows Operating Systems

  • Windows 11 - 22H2 or newer supported
  • Windows 10 - 22H2 or newer Supported
  • Windows 8/8.1 - Incompatible 
  • Windows 7 - Incompatible, Security Risk (since 1/15/20)
  • Windows XP - Incompatible, Security Risk
  • Windows 2000, 98, 95, ME, 3.1, and prior -Incompatible, Security Risk

Apple Operating Systems

  • macOS Sequoia - not yet compatible.  UIS strongly suggests waiting before upgrading.
  • macOS Sonoma 14.0 - Supported
  • macOS Ventura 13.0 - Supported
  • macOS Monterey 12.0 - Partially supported (Zoom no longer supports this operating system)
  • macOS Big Sur 11.0 - Incompatible, leaving security support November 20,2023
  • macOS Catalina 10.15 - Incompatible, leaving security support Fall 2022
  • macOS Mojave 10.14 - Incompatible, leaving security support Fall 2021
  • macOS High Sierra 10.13 and earlier - Incompatible, Security Risk

Other Operating Systems

Non-Apple and non-Microsoft operating systems such as Unix and Linux are not officially supported by UIS and not guaranteed to be compatible with university systems.

Known Issues

  • macOS Catalina 10.15, and later will not run 32-bit applications.
  • macOS Catalina 10.15, and later are not compatible with Microsoft Office 2011, Adobe CS6 or earlier
  • When updating to macOS Big Sur 11.0 from previous macOS Operating Systems, you may need updated Printer Drivers for some multifunction copiers.
